1. Our Fundamental Approach
Guided by its corporate philosophy of “Minna Nakayoku” (Getting Along Together), the Sanrio Group (Sanrio Co., Ltd. and its group companies) has shared values that cherish human connection and compassion with people around the world through its products, services, and business activities.
This philosophy is based on the belief that all people are entitled to dignity, rights and respect, and it serves as the foundation of the Sanrio Group’s commitment to respect human rights.
We believe that respecting the human rights of all people involved in or affected by our business activities is essential to realizing our corporate philosophy of “Minna Nakayoku.”
As part of fulfilling our corporate social responsibility, we recognize our responsibility to respect human rights and are committed to preventing and mitigating adverse human rights impacts throughout our business activities and supply chain.
2. Compliance with and Respect for International Human Rights Standards and Applicable Laws
The Sanrio Group supports and respects internationally recognized human rights standards, including the International Bill of Human Rights, and has established this Policy in accordance with international frameworks such as the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs).
Furthermore, guided by international standards relating to labor rights and children’s rights, we promote initiatives that respect human rights, comply with the laws and regulations of the countries and regions where we conduct business, and strive to respect internationally recognized human rights.
3. Purpose and Scope of This Policy
This Policy sets forth the Sanrio Group’s fundamental approach to respecting human rights. Based on this Policy, the Sanrio Group will develop and implement related policies and guidelines, including the Sanrio Code of Conduct and the Supplier/Licensee Code of Conduct.
This Policy applies to all officers and employees of the Sanrio Group.
We also expect our suppliers, licensees, and business partners involved in the Sanrio Group’s business activities to understand the intent of this Policy and to conduct business activities that respect human rights through relevant codes of conduct.
Furthermore, we give due consideration to the human rights of a wide range of stakeholders affected by our business activities, including customers, business partners, creators, workers in our supply chain, and local communities.
4. Priority Human Rights Issues
Taking into account the nature and characteristics of its business activities, the Sanrio Group focuses on the following priority human rights issues:
- Prohibition of forced labor and child labor
- Prevention of discrimination and harassment
- Ensuring safe and healthy working environments
- Respect for freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining
- Consideration for fair wages and appropriate working hours
- Consideration for the safety and privacy of consumers and users
- Consideration for the impact of content and intellectual property on children and society
All of these human rights issues are important, and the Sanrio Group conducts its business activities with due regard for them.
Furthermore, as a company that provides a wide range of products, services, characters, and creative content for children, the Sanrio Group recognizes children’s rights and the impact of creative expression and intellectual property on society as particularly important human rights issues.
For this reason, the Sanrio Group respects diversity and inclusion in its creative and expressive activities, takes care not to promote discrimination or prejudice, and strives to conduct responsible business activities by considering the impact of its content in light of the age and level of understanding of its audience, so that users and parents can make informed and confident choices.
5. Human Rights Due Diligence
To effectively advance its efforts to respect human rights, the Sanrio Group will continuously implement initiatives based on the principles of human rights due diligence set forth in international standards, including the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs).
Specifically, we will work to identify and assess adverse human rights impacts, prevent and mitigate them, and monitor and improve the effectiveness of our responses.
If it becomes clear that the Sanrio Group’s business activities have caused or contributed to adverse human rights impacts, we will strive to provide appropriate remediation and prevent recurrence.
6. Reporting, Consultation, and Access to Remedy
The Sanrio Group has established a contact point through which all Group officers and employees, as well as business partners of group companies, can seek consultation or report concerns related to human rights.
This contact point ensures the anonymity of those seeking consultation or making reports and the confidentiality of the information provided. We also strive to conduct fair investigations and implement appropriate corrective measures and actions to prevent recurrence.
Should the Sanrio Group’s business activities result in adverse human rights impacts, we will provide appropriate remediation and remedy.
7. Governance and Education
The Sanrio Group will establish an appropriate framework for initiatives to respect human rights based on this Policy, with the involvement of senior management.
In addition, we will continuously provide education and training to officers and employees to enhance their understanding and awareness of human rights, with the goal of ensuring that this Policy is effectively implemented throughout the organization.
8. Information Disclosure and Dialogue
The Sanrio Group will appropriately disclose information regarding this Policy and the status of its human rights initiatives through its website and other channels.
Furthermore, the Sanrio Group will advance its efforts to respect human rights through dialogue with stakeholders.
9. Formulation and Implementation of This Policy
This Policy has been approved by the Board of Directors of Sanrio Co., Ltd. and will be implemented under the responsibility of the senior management of the Sanrio Group.
