Formulation of Basic Policy on Abusive Behavior toward Staff

Introduction

Inspired by Sanrio’s vision of “One World, Connecting Smiles,” we aim to achieve our corporate philosophy of “Minna Nakayoku (Getting Along Together)” by creating smiles one person at a time and spreading the circle of happiness even further afield. To accomplish this, we established the Basic Policy on Abusive Behavior toward Staff because we think it is important to create an environment where every employee can work with a smile and peace of mind.

Definition of Abusive Behavior toward Staff at Sanrio

Of the demands, words, and behavior of customers, business partners, and others in general, abusive behavior toward staff at Sanrio refers to unfair demands and excessive statements and behavior that are clearly inappropriate in light of social norms, and which interfere with the work environment through unreasonable obstruction of company operations and/or threatening the mental and physical health of employees.

Examples of Behavior Considered to be Abusive Behavior toward Staff

  • Physical threats (throwing objects; hitting, kicking, forcefully pushing, and other violent actions; and causing injury)
  • Psychological threats (intimidation, slander, defamation, insults, character assassination, and abusive language)
  • Coercive words and actions
  • Demanding that an employee beg for forgiveness on hands and knees
  • Continuous and persistent words and actions
  • Restrictive actions (refusal to leave, staging a sit-in, confinement, longer telephone calls than necessary)
  • Discriminatory words and actions
  • Sexual remarks and conduct
  • Threatening and making demands of an individual employee
  • Excessive product exchanges, monetary compensation, and demands for apologies
  • Defamation of an employee on social media and/or the Internet
  • Posting information on social media and/or the Internet (doxing) that infringes on the privacy of an employee (an employee’s name, photo, video showing an employee’s face, etc.)
  • Other behavior that meets Sanrio’s definition of abusive behavior toward staff, described above.

Note: The above content is based on the "Manual on Prevention of Abusive Behavior by Staff"(Japanese) by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

Basic Approach to Abusive Behavior toward Staff

Sanrio views the inquiries, opinions and requests we receive as valuable opportunities to obtain useful information on improving the quality of our products and services, and we respond to these sincerely. Nevertheless, when a customer’s demands, statements, and behavior are clearly inappropriate in light of social norms, they could degrade the dignity of a Sanrio employee and harm their mental and physical health. Such behavior could also inconvenience other customers if it obstructs an employee’s performance of duties.
We think that ensuring a work environment where employees can work with peace of mind will lead to building more trust with our customers. Sanrio may suspend or refuse subsequent support if a customer’s demands, words, and behavior are deemed to be abusive behavior toward staff.

Sanrio’s Initiatives Relating to Abusive Behavior toward Staff

We implement the following initiatives relating to abusive behavior toward staff.

  • Make sure all employees are aware of and understand the basic policy
  • Specify methods and procedures for responding to abusive behavior toward staff and educate employees
  • Encourage employees to report to and consult a superior when they have been subjected to abusive behavior by a customer (Sanrio has established contacts for employees who have been abused by a customer) When the Sanrio contact receives a report or consultation, a systematic response is mounted and care of the employee involved is prioritized
  • Educate employees so they do not engage in abusive behavior toward others when they are the customer

Sanrio will continue to operate a business of sharing and communicating love.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
